It seems like everywhere I go these days more and more women tend to have a great deal of make up on. I understand if I see that at a fancy dinner party or a wedding, but why do you need lashes from here to Mexico at the mall or at the office?

I caught up with local beauty/makeup icon Layann Salem to shed some light on the situation. It took some onion peeling to get to the core of the issue and realize its goes far deeper than just applying paint on a face.

“Young girls growing up get insecurities about their skin. It’s about getting them comfortable in their own skin because they’re beautiful with or without make up. Make up is just an accessory. The skin that they already have is who they are and make up should not change or define you. I’ve noticed that fourteen and fifteen year olds can’t go out without make up because of their self esteem issues, because social media has defined this standard of beauty, which is completely WRONG. It raises girls to believe that you should SUFFOCATE your skin. Your skin should breath. You should be comfortable to go out with it. You should take care of it. It’s a part of you. As you grow older make up will just de-age you.

Have you gone through that yourself?

Yes, I went through a phase. I put on make up all the time because I didn’t think my natural beauty would be enough. Until I realized that this is MY skin, this is MY life. I need to be comfortable. I want to touch my skin and not have anything on my fingers or on someone’s shirt.

So what brought about that change for you?

I started having side effects and pimples and other stuff that I never used to get. I was emotionally uncomfortable with that. So I started taking care of my skin more than I would take care of my make up application. This was last year, not too long ago actually!

Do you advocate this way of thinking to you clients at The Glam House?

I do. I get so many questions like “How do you make your make up look flawless?” The core of it is to take of your skin because good clear skin equals good make up. It’s counter intuitive. So don’t wear make up too often so when you DO wear make up it looks good.

How do people react to this idea?

I get a lot of comments and its not all love and support. A lot of people hate, but it if you stick to that hate then you never going to move forward. Its just people weighing you down. People who don’t have enough love in their life or are still searching for it. People would say things like “you need to conceal those dark circles around your eyes.” But that’s not the way it’s supposed to go. You were born this way, why not embrace it? It gets hard when have negative people around you so I had people in my life that I had to push away to go after what I want. I hurt but you get over it. I’d rather have one true friend that a hundred fake ones.

I’m going to dig a little deeper here, I feel like there’s a very personal story that you shying away from. Go for it. Tell me the story.

I had a certain someone in my life. I grew up with this person. But then I pushed a lot of people away from my life because they were defensive and insecure. They didn’t like me being in the public eye because it would hurt their reputation. When I started succeeding they would threaten to cut me off if I didn’t stop. And it was a time where they were my world. I lost a lot of business opportunities at that time.  But when I finally burst and let go I realized that it’s more about me. It wasn’t easy but wasn’t hard either. When I left they said, “I hope you fail”. I thought to myself, “Thanks for giving me the challenge in the first place, look where I am now.”

What have you done since then?

I’m more confident. I started loving myself because you need to start with that in order to love other people. I started working with more brands, interacting with more bloggers and appearing at more events. I’m doing what I love and I’m loving it. If someone truly loves you they won’t let you give up what you love.

“Some people are just a headache, a migraine that won’t stop”

So what’s next for you, where would you go from here?

I would love to have my own show on TV about style and beauty and spread love and motivation. I’d love to travel as well, Iceland and Alaska to see the northern lights.
